The Evolution of Senior Retirement Housing

The idea of senior retirement housing has been initiated years ago. Some said that it was called ohana house or granny unit back then. The article explores the development of senior retirement housing and various aspects that come into consideration on developing the concept.

Different generations

Many years ago, it was common for families to live together under one roof. Sometimes there were two, three, or four generations in one house. The elderly was being taken care of by the whole family members. You would see the grandmother sewing on a chair near the kitchen table while the grandfather was out on the porch guiding some tasks or doing fun activities with grandchildren.

Over the time, the culture has shifted and technology came into play. Nowadays, young generations are busy in the workplace and do not have enough time to spend with their families. It becomes normal for parents and grandparents to be moved to other places, which are commonly called senior retirement housing.

The concept of living space

Sometimes it is not easy to determine how much space a person needs. In general, the space should be enough for sleeping, bathing, and having meals. Perhaps it sounds too radical, but we are talking only about basic needs and see the difference between past and present in providing the living space.

In the past, a teenager normally would spend a few years in the house to learn various home skills before going out and adventuring the world. After some years, usually after marriage, the child returned home and lived together with parents. With this cycle, the family homestead was preserved and remained intact because it underwent continuous maintenance. Everyone lived in one house and grandchildren grew up together with their grandparents. Parents were free from worry because they knew that their children are saved. Elderly could age gracefully and peacefully in a loving atmosphere.

This condition definitely sounds good and this is what really happened in the past based on historical data. Therefore, it is good if senior retirement housing can follow some of the concepts from the past.

For some people, it is not easy to change the family living situation with a short period of time. Our society needs considerably time to change. What have happened right now are actually the expressions of what public want. Therefore, if we want to change the concept of senior retirement housing system, we need to change the view of the public and these changes start from each household.
